Breakfast at Birds Ferry Lodge features seasonal, homegrown and locally sourced ingredients, with homemade specialities prepared by Chef Alison. What we serve changes with the seasons and what is available from our garden and local producers.

Whether you plan to cycle the Kawatiri Coastal Trail, explore nearby beaches and coastal walks, or simply enjoy a slower morning at the lodge, breakfast is a relaxed start to your day on the West Coast.

Enjoy your morning meal with wide open views and the personal hospitality of a small, hosted bed and breakfast.

Chef-Prepared Dinner at Birds Ferry Lodge

"They gave us a very warm welcome and Chef Alison prepared an exquisite dinner. Our meals at Birds Ferry were by far the best we had while in New Zealand! She is quite the chef, "

Dinner at Birds Ferry Lodge is a relaxed, chef-prepared dining experience available exclusively to lodge guests..

Reflecting the beauty and bounty of New Zealand, we serve a seasonal set menu crafted by Chef Alison, known as the Kiwi concept “Trust the Chef”. Each evening’s menu is inspired by the freshest local ingredients available, often guided by what is perfectly ripe in the garden that very afternoon. Think fresh salmon, homegrown asparagus, juicy strawberries, and just-picked salad greens.

For guests exploring the West Coast, dinner at the lodge means there is no need to drive back into Westport in the evening. After a day visiting Punakaiki, cycling the Kawatiri Coastal Trail or exploring nearby walks and beaches, you can return to Birds Ferry Lodge, put away the car keys and settle in for the night.

Dinner is served at 6pm, creating a relaxed and unhurried rhythm to the evening, which typically winds down by around 8pm.

Dinner is a hosted experience, and we are typically present during the evening, offering a warm, personal style of hospitality that many of our international guests particularly value. This approach is best suited to those who enjoy being hosted rather than simply accommodated, and who appreciate a slower, more social style of travel.

Chef Alison prepares each meal for a maximum of four guests at a time, ensuring an intimate dining experience where every dish is crafted with care and attention to detail. Elegant table settings with silverware, garden-fresh flowers, and candlelight create an atmosphere of refined relaxation, making each evening feel quietly special.

For guests who prefer a more private dining experience, a separate table is available. If you would rather enjoy your evening without company, simply let us know in advance and we will be happy to arrange this.

A carefully curated wine list, featuring mainly South Island wines, is available to complement your meal.

We are happy to accommodate most dietary preferences with advance notice.
