Denniston Plateau: History and Vast Views

High above the coastline, the Denniston Plateau tells the story of coal mining in one of New Zealand’s most dramatic settings.

The drive climbs steeply, revealing expansive views back towards the Tasman Sea. At the top, interpretation panels and preserved remnants of the historic mining settlement provide insight into the harsh conditions endured by workers.

The landscape feels exposed and powerful, often wrapped in shifting cloud.

Denniston is an easy half day excursion and adds depth to understanding the character of the region.
