Exploring the Ōpārara Arches Near Karamea

North of Westport, beyond the small settlement of Karamea, lies one of the most remarkable natural formations on the West Coast: the Ōpārara Arches in Kahurangi National Park.

The drive itself is scenic, following stretches of coastline before turning inland through forest. Once in the Ōpārara Basin, short walking tracks lead through ancient podocarp forest to vast limestone arches carved over centuries by water.

The main arch rises dramatically from the riverbed and feels both immense and quiet at the same time. The walk is manageable for most visitors, though sturdy footwear is recommended.

This is not a quick stop. Allow half a day, or combine it with a relaxed lunch in Karamea. Guests staying three or four nights find it fits comfortably into their stay without feeling rushed.
