Exploring the Kawatiri Coastal Trail

Mountains, Sea and Serenity

The Kawatiri Coastal Trail is quickly becoming one of the most scenic cycling experiences on the northern West Coast. Stretching between Westport, Carters Beach, Cape Foulwind and eventually to Charleston, this purpose-built route follows a mix of coastal bush, wetlands and wild ocean views.

The surface is wide and well-graded, ideal for e-bikes or leisurely riders who want to enjoy the journey rather than rush through it. Cyclists can pedal past the Orowaiti Estuary where herons and oystercatchers wade, cross graceful timber bridges, and pause for a coffee or ice cream at Carters Beach. A little further along, a short detour leads to the Tauranga Bay Seal Colony, home to hundreds of fur seals during the summer months.

The trail is being completed in stages, with plenty already open for a relaxed half-day ride. For visitors staying at Birds Ferry Lodge, access points are only a short drive away, making it easy to explore by day and return to comfort, good food and a hot tub soak by night.
