Unmissable Places to Discover on the Northern West Coast
Many visitors rush through the northern West Coast, on their way to or from Punakaiki, but those who pause to explore soon discover a region rich in quiet beauty, local history and unforgettable nature. From limestone canyons and glow-worm caves to gentle cycling trails and hidden beaches, this part of the coast rewards those who slow down and stay a little longer.
Here are some of our favourite unmissable places to see during your stay at Birds Ferry Lodge, each within an easy drive of the lodge.
1. Kawatiri Coastal Trail
A wonderful way to explore our region at a slower pace, this newly completed trail links Westport, Carters Beach and Charleston. It’s perfect for soft cycling or walking, winding through native forest, wetlands and coastal farmland with sea views at every turn. Stop for a coffee or picnic along the way and enjoy the peace and birdlife.
Tip: The section from Westport to Carters Beach is ideal for a leisurely morning ride or walk.
2. Tauranga Bay and the Seal Colony
A short scenic drive from the lodge, Tauranga Bay is home to a large colony of New Zealand fur seals. The viewing platform at Cape Foulwind is easily accessible and offers superb coastal views. Between December and March, the seal pups are a delight to watch as they learn to swim in the rock pools below.
Don’t miss: The coastal walk between Cape Foulwind and Lighthouse Road for breathtaking cliff-top views.
3. Charming Charleston
Just 20 minutes south, the small historic village of Charleston was once a bustling gold rush town. Today it is the gateway to the Nile River Caves, where you can join a guided tour or try the gentle glow-worm cave rafting adventure with Underworld Adventures. The limestone landscapes here are some of the most dramatic on the coast.
4. Pororari River Track, Punakaiki
Part of the Paparoa National Park, this track follows a peaceful river gorge lined with towering limestone cliffs and nikau palms. The reflections in the still water are simply stunning, especially in the late afternoon light.
For a longer walk, link with the Pancake Rocks Track to experience both river and coastline in one outing.
5. Truman Track
A short but spectacular walk just north of Punakaiki, the Truman Track takes you through lush rainforest to a secluded beach where waterfalls tumble directly onto the sand. It is a photographer’s dream and an easy walk suitable for all ages.
6. Oparara Arches, Karamea
For those willing to venture a little further north, the Oparara Basin is truly unforgettable. Deep in the rainforest of Kahurangi National Park, these massive limestone arches have been shaped by the river over millions of years. The walk to the Oparara Arch is gentle, and the nearby Moria Gate Arch features a short loop with interpretive signs and moss-covered beauty.
Allow a full day from Birds Ferry Lodge and take a picnic, it is well worth the journey.
7. Reefton – The Town of Light
An easy drive inland, Reefton offers a fascinating glimpse into New Zealand’s gold mining heritage. Stroll along the main street with its beautifully restored buildings, visit the Reefton Distilling Co. for a tasting of their award-winning gins, or learn about the town’s claim to fame as the first in the Southern Hemisphere to have electric street lighting.
8. Charming Small Stops Along the Way
The joy of travelling the northern West Coast lies as much in the little discoveries as in the big attractions.
Keep an eye out for:
• Local galleries and artisans tucked away in bush clearings
• The beach at Nine Mile or Okari, often completely empty
• Short detours to historic sites such as Denniston Plateau, with its remarkable mining history and sweeping views
9. Westport Museum and Pounamu Pathway
For those who enjoy local stories, the Coaltown Museum in Westport brings the region’s pioneering past to life. Soon, the new Pounamu Pathway visitor experience will open here, weaving together Māori legends, natural wonders and local history in a world-class interactive format.
10. Evenings at Birds Ferry Lodge
After a day of exploring, return to Birds Ferry Lodge and let the tranquillity of the setting do the rest. Soak in the hot tub as the sun sets over the Paparoa Ranges, enjoy a seasonal Trust the Chef dinner featuring local produce, and listen to the Weka and Kiwi calling across the gardens.
It is the perfect way to end a day on the West Coast, relaxed, connected and far from the rush of everyday life.
Plan Your Stay
