Punakaiki Pancake Rocks — Nature’s Masterpiece on the West Coast

Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, Nature’s Masterpiece on the West Coast

The West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island is home to many natural wonders , wild beaches, lush rainforests, and dramatic landscapes shaped by time and weather. One of the most iconic stops along the coast is the famous Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, a must-see for visitors exploring this special part of the country.

What Are the Pancake Rocks?

The Pancake Rocks are a fascinating geological formation located in Paparoa National Park, just north of Greymouth. Over millions of years, layers of limestone and sandstone were compressed and sculpted by the sea, wind, and rain,  leaving behind these distinctive “stacked” rock formations that really do look like piles of giant stone pancakes.

At high tide, the area comes to life with powerful blowholes that send plumes of seawater shooting into the air, an impressive display of nature’s force.

How to Experience Punakaiki

The Pancake Rocks and Blowholes Walk is an easy, well-maintained loop track suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The walk takes about 20 minutes, but you’ll want to allow extra time to stop at the many viewpoints and soak up the scenery.

Sunset is particularly beautiful here, with the golden light catching the layers of rock and the Tasman Sea stretching endlessly into the horizon.

Tip: If you can, time your visit for high tide when the blowholes are most active. There’s a helpful tide timetable available at the site, online and local visitor centres.

Nearby Attractions

Punakaiki is more than just the Pancake Rocks. The surrounding area offers plenty of other things to see and do:

  • The Pororari River Track, a scenic walk through lush rainforest alongside a crystal-clear river.

  • Paparoa National Park, famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, native forest, and birdlife.

  • The Punakaiki Cavern, a small limestone cave you can explore (bring a torch).

  • Local cafes and craft shops, perfect for a coffee stop or picking up a unique souvenir.

Staying on the West Coast

Punakaiki is about 30 minutes South of Bird’s Ferry Lodge, making it a perfect day trip for our guests. It’s one of those places that captures the wild beauty of the West Coast,  dramatic, rugged, and utterly unforgettable.

After a day exploring the Pancake Rocks and coastal scenery, there’s nothing better than returning to the peaceful comfort of your accommodation, soaking in the hot tub, and enjoying a glass of wine while the sun sets over the West Coast hills.
