Kawatiri Coastal Trail, discovering West Coast Birdlife Through the Lens of Grant Watson

Birds are an essential part of the natural world, filling our landscapes with song and color. Whether in a garden, along a coastal trail, or deep in the forest, these remarkable creatures contribute far beyond their beauty. They help control pests, disperse seeds, and signal changes in the environment. Yet, many bird populations are in decline, making their presence even more precious.

New Zealand’s West Coast is a haven for birdlife, with its mix of wetlands, forests, and rugged shorelines. Local photographer and conservationist Grant Watson has spent years capturing the unique bird species of this region. Originally from Northern Ireland, Grant lived in Australia for 30 years before settling in Westport, where he now enjoys the ever-changing landscapes and abundant wildlife.

Since the Pūwaha Section of the Kawatiri Coastal Trail opened, Grant has found it to be a perfect setting for observing and photographing birds. Walking the trail with his camera in hand, he takes advantage of the diverse ecosystems, from native bush to estuarine wetlands, where birds thrive.

Grant’s love for birds began as a young ornithologist growing up on the north coast of Northern Ireland. His photography journey took flight while running an ecological restoration business in Australia, working with private landowners to rehabilitate native bushland. Inspired by his father, who was also a professional photographer, he combined his love for conservation with capturing the natural world through his lens.

The Kawatiri Coastal Trail offers a rare opportunity to observe birdlife up close. The changing landscapes along the path create ideal conditions for a variety of species, from coastal birds along the shoreline to those nesting in the native forest. Light is a crucial element in photography, and Grant recommends the golden hours shortly after sunrise and before sunset as the best time to capture birds in their natural habitat. Equipped with a DSLR camera and a zoom lens, he carefully watches the birds’ behavior, allowing him to anticipate the perfect shot.

One of Grant’s favorite subjects is the white-fronted tern, a graceful coastal bird often seen along the trail. Before breeding, the male offers small fish to the female in a courtship ritual, a moment that makes for a stunning photograph. Observing these behaviors takes patience, but it is what makes bird photography so rewarding.

Grant’s work extends beyond photography and he is deeply involved in ecological restoration. Changes in bird populations provide important insights into environmental shifts, from habitat loss to the effects of climate change. Through his images, he hopes to raise awareness and inspire others to appreciate and protect the natural world.

For those staying at Birdsferrylodge, taking the time to walk the coastal trails and observe the local birdlife offers a deeper connection to the West Coast’s untouched beauty. Whether it is the flash of a kingfisher diving into the water or the melodic call of a fernbird hidden in the reeds, these moments make the region unforgettable.

A visit to the West Coast is not just about passing through. It is about slowing down, immersing yourself in nature, and experiencing the magic of the wild.
