Trail Highlights

Each section of the Kawatiri Coastal Trail reveals something unique, from historic sites to spectacular natural beauty.

At Martins Creek, cross the wobbly Martins Creek Suspension Bridge and discover Ngahue Shelter, a reconstructed Māori Whare near an archaeological site dating back to 1350, one of New Zealand’s earliest known settlements.

Carters Beach offers uninterrupted views of the Tasman Sea and a charming beachside setting. Enjoy the playground, café, and picnic area, or time your visit to catch an unforgettable sunset over the waves.

Cape Foulwind provides stunning views through Williams Gully and across the Paparoa Ranges. On clear days, you can even see Aoraki/Mt Cook. Take a detour to visit the Cape Foulwind lighthouse or watch New Zealand fur seals basking on the coastal rocks.

Tauranga Bay is a paradise for nature lovers. Spot little blue penguins, watch surfers riding world-class waves, and experience some of the best birdwatching on the West Coast. At night, this area offers incredible stargazing opportunities.

The Ōkari River and Lagoon section blends history, geology, and ecology. With stunning views south toward Aoraki/Mt Cook, this tranquil area is home to rare bird species and unique rock formations that tell the story of the land.

Waitakere and Charleston feature the impressive Nile River Suspension Bridge and a rich gold rush history. Once a booming town with over 8,000 residents and 80 hotels, Charleston is now a haven for adventure seekers, offering cave rafting, rock climbing, and secluded beaches.
